A Talent Gone Too Soon: In Memory of Awtar Kaul Awtar Kaul

Whenever Hindi parallel cinema is discussed, the names of Mani Kaul and Kumar Shahani inevitably come to the fore. Their critically acclaimed films such as Uski Roti and Maya Darpan were based on outstanding literary works. Yet, 27 Down (1973), a National Award-winning film based on the Hindi novel Atharah Suraj ke Paudhe, is often left out of the discussion. 27 Down was directed by Awtar Kaul (1939-74). On the very day the National Award was announced, Awtar died by drowning in Bombay (now Mumbai). It remains the only completed feature film he ever directed. The film was also honoured at the prestigious Locarno and Mannheim international film festivals.

Awtar’s Heartwrenching Life Journey

In the recently published book Awtar Kaul: The (In)Complete Story, Vinod Kaul, former executive director of Rajya Sabha TV and Awtar’s nephew, writes about the director's life, family, travels and the making of the film. The book also includes recollections from the film’s cinematographer, sound recordist and some film critics. Vinod Kaul writes in the book at one point: “It is bittersweet to think about this film [27 Down] as the starting leg of so many others and the end of Awtar’s. What all could he have given us!”

Like Mani Kaul and Kumar Shahani, Awtar (born in Srinagar, Kashmir), had received formal training in filmmaking. In the 1960s, he was a film student at the City University of New York. In 1969, Mani Kaul made Uski Roti, based on a story by Hindi writer and pioneer of the nayi kahani movement, Mohan Rakesh. The same year also saw the release of Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome and Basu Chatterjee’s Sara Akash. These low-budget films did not depend on conventional ideas of the “star”. The filmmakers turned to literary works for their narratives. Their sophisticated use of imagery and sound placed them in a distinctive space apart from mainstream commercial cinema, thus heralding the “new wave” or “parallel cinema” in Hindi.

After Bhuvan Shome and Sara Akash, Mani Kaul, Kumar Shahani and Awtar received loans from the Film Finance Corporation to make films. 27 Down was made on a modest budget of two lakh rupees. Raakhee was a successful actress in commercial cinema at the time, yet, she agreed to star in the film without demanding any remuneration and also sans makeup.

Vinod Kaul recounts an incident from the shoot in the book. Raakhee felt that a shot was not working visually and she told Awtar that a tree was obstructing the frame, disturbing the composition. He calmly but firmly replied, “The trees are more important to me.”  Raakhee did not particularly like his response, but she understood that cinema is a director’s medium.

Commenting on how he sees Awtar’s filmmaking as distinct from that of Mani Kaul’s and Kumar Shahani’s, veteran theatre actor and director M.K. Raina shares an anecdote about Awtar and Mani Kaul: “Awtar would say, you make cine-ma, I make cine-baap. You operate the camera, I turn the camera faster.”

Through the metaphor and symbolism of the railway, Awtar sensitively and skillfully captured in black-and-white images the dreams, dilemmas and the alienation of a generation coming of age in independent India; the tensions in relationships between men and women; social pressures, and the conflict between personal desire and social responsibility. It still resonates with the youth of India, particularly those living away from the centres of power and opportunity.

27 Down’s central characters are Sanjay (M.K. Raina), a railway ticket conductor and Shalini (Raakhee), a typist working for Life Insurance Corporation. Shalini is responsible for supporting her two younger siblings and grandfather. She works in Mumbai, far away from her Pune home. Her grandfather does not want Shalini to enter into a relationship with someone who might distance her from the family.

Sanjay, the protagonist, seems to have no place he can truly call home. Like a railway carriage, he appears condemned to remain perpetually in transit. His personality is overshadowed by his imposing father, played by Om Shivpuri.

In the film’s opening scene, Sanjay is asleep on a train. The sound of the moving train is heard, followed by a voice-over: “Is that the same bridge again?... There are so many bridges along the way. It feels as though from the beginning until now, I have been crossing countless bridges. There are people who travel from one place to another. As for me, I seem to have set out from somewhere only to keep moving somewhere.”

27 Down was M.K. Raina’s first film. He plays a character incapable of making decisions, constantly suffocated and caught between opposing forces. Shalini, meanwhile, is markedly different from the female characters generally seen in Hindi cinema of that period. Burdened by family responsibilities, she is a working woman who makes independent decisions about her relationships and takes the initiative herself. Raakhee portrays the character with remarkable conviction.

After the film’s release, in September 1974, Atharah Suraj ke Paudhe was republished under the title 27 Down. Dedicated to Awtar, the new edition carried a foreword by Ramesh Bakshi. He wrote that the novel was the story of a Sanjay belonging to a new generation, who continually fought an 18-day Mahabharat within himself—between his wife, his lover, his father, his job, his ambitions, his indecisiveness and the relentless chaos of life.

27 Down is a classic. It contains certain images of trains and railway platforms that remain etched in the viewer’s memory forever. Much of the film was shot on moving trains using a handheld camera. Notably, freshly graduated from FTII, this was cinematographer A.K. Bir’s first film. He received the National Award for his work on it. The film’s use of sound, too, deserves special attention. Hariprasad Chaurasia and Bhubaneshwar Mishra composed the music while Bansi Chandragupta, who had worked closely with Satyajit Ray, designed the production.

In 2024, the film’s restored version was screened at the International Film Festival of India in Goa. Mani Kaul was a great admirer of the film. Raina says it was Mani Kaul who suggested his name to Awtar for the film. Mani Kaul would go to watch rehearsals at the National School of Drama (NSD) where he was a student. Later, Awtar and Bakshi went to NSD to meet him and discuss the book and the scenario. Raina fondly remembers Awtar and the days of making the film, describing them as a time of “complete madness” when everyone was equally involved in the creative process.

In a Changing World, Detha's Stories Remind Us How Folklore Can Question Power

The centenary year celebration of renowned Rajasthani writer and Padma Shri awardee Vijaydan Detha (1926-2013) is an opportunity to revisit his work that has travelled far beyond the landscape in which it was born. Detha, also known as Bijji, painstakingly explored, collected and revived the folk tales and oral traditions deeply rooted in the soil of Rajasthan. Through translations, his stories reached readers across India and the world, while theatre practitioners, filmmakers and Dastangoi performers found in them rich material for reinterpretation and contemporary expression.

The list of artists drawn to Detha’s work is remarkable. Habib Tanvir and Shyam Benegal adapted Charandas Chor, Mani Kaul and Amol Palekar brought Duvidha to the screen, Prakash Jha adapted Parineeti, Pushpendra Singh made Lajwanti, and Mahmood Farooqui adapted Chouboli for Dastangoi, among many others.

What is it about Detha’s folk tales that continues to connect them with everyone, from young artists to urban audiences? I have had an answer recently in Pune, during a performance of Detha’s well-known story Dohri Zindagi.

Told in Marwari and Hindi, Dohri Zindagi revolves around two miserly and greedy merchants who arrange the marriage of their unborn children while they are still in the womb. Both households are blessed with daughters but one of the merchants decides to raise his daughter as a boy. Driven by the lure of dowry, the two are eventually married off. The truth about this same-sex marriage is revealed on their wedding night. Gradually, however, love begins to blossom between the two women. Rejected and despised by society, they create new identities for themselves – Beejan and Teejan.

Directed by Gurleen Judge and Neha Singh, the play moves beyond a story of greed and avarice to confront questions of same-sex relationships in a feudal society and the duplicity of modern social structures. The story feels strikingly contemporary because its emotional core remains immediately recognisable. Some members of the Pune audience appeared uncomfortable with a few of the play’s “bold” scenes on stage. That discomfort, however, was precisely what the directors intended to provoke.

Detha was born on September 1, 1926, in Borunda, near Jodhpur, into a family associated with the bardic tradition of Rajasthan. His monumental 14-volume Baatan Ri Phulwari (Garden of Tales) brought together a vast collection of Rajasthani folk tales and has subsequently been translated into Hindi and other languages, earning wide appreciation.

Yet Detha’s importance lies not merely in preserving folklore. His stories repeatedly transform folk narratives into sites of questioning and resistance. Whether in Duvidha, Lajwanti or Dohri Zindagi, women find themselves trapped within patriarchal structures while experiencing an intense yearning for love, dignity and freedom. In Detha’s stories, a ghost can be a lover, a companion or an ally. A ghost appears in both Duvidha and Dohri Zindagi, blurring the boundaries between the real and the imagined.

Duvidha, in particular, can be read as a feminist tale about agency, desire and the limited choices available to women within patriarchal society beautifully depicted on screen by Mani Kaul. Through its unique non-linear narrative style, the film treads between the real and the imaginary.

Detha’s folk imagination createsspaces in which women can challenge identities imposed upon them even if those challenges come at a considerable cost.

A few years ago, when I asked filmmaker Pushpendra Singh about adapting Detha’s stories, he spoke about the fundamental challenge facing any artist working with folklore:

“As an artiste, you constantly grapple with how to translate a [folk] tale or adapt a literary piece. As a storyteller, you also want your stories to look contemporary. Old feudalism has given way to something new, not so widely seen in today’s Rajasthan.”

This perhaps explains the enduring appeal of Detha. His stories are rooted in the geography of Rajasthan and its cultural memory, yet they are not confined by them. The folk element in Detha’s writing comes through its language, idiom, humour and dialogue. But beneath the texture of folklore lies a persistent engagement with power, desire, social hierarchy and freedom.

When Detha wrote Dohri Zindagi around four decades ago, there was little open discussion in Indian society about same-sex relationships. When the story is adapted for the stage today, contemporary voices and concerns inevitably become part of it. It is therefore hardly surprising that the performers in Dohri Zindagi also felt free to comment on contemporary Indian politics.

Along with his close friend and noted folklorist and musicologist Komal Kothari, Detha founded the Rupayan Sansthan, an institution devoted to documenting and promoting the folklore, art, music and cultural traditions of Rajasthan. Detha’s birth centenary is an opportunity to ask why folk narratives continue to matter in a rapidly changing world. His stories remind us that folklore is not a frozen tradition. It is capable of questioning power.

As performed during Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META) last year in Delhi, the award-winning play Swang: Jas Ki Tas (in Bundelkhandi dialect), which is based on his story Thakur Ka Roothana, uses elements of the traditional folk performance style of Swang to expose the contemporary social and political disorder around us.

Detha’s stories continue to find new readers, filmmakers, theatre practitioners and audiences. They speak in the language of folklore, but they ask questions about contemporary realities which confront us.

Amma Ariyan at Cannes Classics: John Abraham’s Vision and Legacy Revisited

The restored version of John Abraham’s cult classic Malayalam film Amma Ariyan was screened under the Cannes Classics section at the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival recently. The film that released in 1986, a year before Abraham’s passing away at 49, was made through funding received from people as part of the Odessa Collective—an initiative of Abraham, the avant-garde filmmaker, who graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. The film has been restored by the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF). Actor Joy Mathew and editor Bina Paul were present at the screening, along with FHF director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur. In this interview, Paul discusses Abraham’s vision, legacy and the film’s journey with Arvind Das, Director of School of Media and Communication Studies at DY Patil International University, Pune.

Q You were present during the screening of Amma Ariyan (Report to Mother) at Cannes. How was the experience?
A It was a very good experience and a proud moment for all of us. John died soon after the film was made. Though it was sent to one or two festivals, there is not much push for external exposure after the director’s death.
Q Why was it not released?
A The idea was not to release the film in the traditional way. The idea of the Odessa initiative was not to get into the whole distribution circuit. But the film was shown widely in Kerala.
Q I remember seeing it at the FTII 15 years ago.
A The film didn’t receive the kind of critical appreciation it should have. Besides, there was only one print left, so we were nervous to show that print. Though the NFAI [National Film Archive of India] had done some digitisation, it was necessary that it be restored. The sound had to come out properly, and only then could we show it. The restoration was a very important moment of rediscovering the film.
Q The film has long been considered a cult classic among cinephiles and film students. Why do you think it continues to resonate across generations?
A The form of the film is very interesting—it’s a travelogue and has documentary and fictional elements. The idea of the film is about this sense of unrest that people feel when there is great inequality. After Independence, there was so much hope in this country, but with globalisation, a lot of people lost their bearings. And again, in the global situation today, people are feeling quite lost. So, I think that humanism and the need to address the essential human question appeals to people.
Q How do you reflect, four decades later, on Abraham’s cinematic language and vision?
A For me, it was a great learning experience. When I saw the film this time, after 40 years, I was watching it on a big screen. Of course, there were moments when I thought I could have done things differently, but I felt there was a good flow to the film. John’s guidance made it possible. Because there wasn’t a tightly written script, I understood a lot about editing through this film.
A It was difficult that there wasn’t a script, but the travel bit—that we were moving from Calicut to Cochin—worked as the backbone of the story. We had to work on weaving different stories, giving them prominence and also highlighting the central idea of the mother being the person who is the observer.
Q I noticed that the mother figure is not just the mother of Hari, but she is present throughout the film…
A Yes, that was part of the design we made. Though he was very close to his own mother, who passed away, his elder sister was his mother figure as well. He came from a close-knit family. Though he was a completely crazy person in that family set-up, he was still loved by his sisters, and he believed that his mother was the grounding force. So, when the mother and the girlfriend are together, a sort of amalgamation takes place. We had a lot of discussions. He [Abraham] kept saying that the film is not just about Hari’s mother, but is the story of how a mother needs to know what is happening in her son’s life. In the end, when she says she could not prevent it, that brings forth the tragedy that mothers are unable to control the destinies of their children, though they love them very much.
Q While it was a personal movie for John, it was also political. What would have been his reaction if he were at the Cannes?
A The world is a worse place than it was. We hoped that there would be a change, but there isn’t. John would have reacted the same way. He was a great humanist. He did not align himself with any one political party. His politics was much deeper.
Q While watching the movie, I felt that there was some element of Ritwik Ghatak in it.
A John was Ghatak’s student at the FTII, so it’s natural. I think, for John, Ghatak was a kind of life figure. He internalised Ghatak a lot. There is that sense of political pain that I think he inherited from Ghatak. And his lifestyle.
Q How long was the duration of the shooting?
A They shot for about 30 days or so. I only went for a few days. They decided to be very fluid with the camera and chose to do it in black and white.
Q The movie starts with the suicide of a young Naxalite. What was John’s take on the Naxalite movement?
A While he was talking about Naxalism in the movie, he was also talking about small protests everywhere. There were many unsuccessful movements. I think he was talking about the disappointments of all that.
Q Odessa Collective crowd-funded the movie. Was there another movie made?
A No other movie could be made. But this was not really crowdfunding; it was much more organic. Everybody was giving one rupee, two rupees, but they were actually participating because they were present during the shooting and distribution.
Q What was the reaction of the audience in Kerala?
A The audience really liked it. But I think there was some disappointment about whether the film had achieved its objective. The political class didn’t like it.
Q During the parallel cinema movement, filmmakers often engaged deeply with socio-political issues through their work. In recent years, however, many films appear to be leaning more toward propaganda. How do you view this shift?
A There are different viewpoints that they’re trying to propagate. So, it’s a completely different time. I don’t know if the same kind of films are being made now. They are ideologically different.
Q With the rise of OTT platforms, Malayalam cinema has become more accessible to audiences. How do you see the legacy of the parallel cinema movement of the 1970s and 1980s influencing the new generation of filmmakers?
A I think the legacy of experimentation is there. People are willing to try out new things.
Q Are you satisfied with the restoration of the film?
A The archive has kept the only print that was available in good shape. But since there was only one print, it was important to revise that, to make it possible to see a proper version on digital. So, they worked on the subtitles and the sound. It was a painstaking process, even though that one source material was quite good.
Q Did John talk about any other films he wanted to make while you were working on this project?
A He would have liked to make many movies. He could talk much more with Venu [the cinematographer]. He did want to make movies on some of Paul Zacharia’s stories.
