Time is changing here too

Before
departing for my long cherished tour to Vienna, Manish, a dear friend in Delhi, wrote mischievously, 'Vivien is your kind of woman; you will instantly fall in love with her.'

Although I didn’t meet Vivian, a Viennese, in JNU (she attended a summer school there), I saw her pictures and heard about her creative quest and photographic skills from Manish.

At the Vienna railway station I went to buy a bouquet for Vivien.

It is good to be romantic in Delhi than in Vienna! Seeing the Euro tag on flowers, I thought words are enough here. But then how vulnerable you are, when you do not know the language…

A smile came on Vivian’s face. 'Hope these flowers last when I am back home.' She said. Vivien looked more mature than her age, when she smiled.

It was a cloudy evening, streets were sparsely crowded. In the fresco of lights night fell down silently.

The scenes of ‘Habermasian Public Sphere’, in the late 19th Century Europe, were before me. Newspapers and magazines were lying on a big desk near front door. People were chatting, smoking and sitting leisurely after day’s work. I can see coffee houses around every nook and corner of the city.

I was thrilled and clicked some photos. I asked Vivien to take some more.

'Camera looks more artistic in your hand.'

'I love this sound- ‘Tak’, when flash goes up…It is irresistible.' Vivien said.

I was as curious as 'Alice was in the wonderland.' Vivien was trying to answer my queries patiently. I joked, there is 'Google God', do not stress yourself too much, please.

In Vienna, you can bump into an actress at a street, meet a musician in a tube or metro, and chat with a painter near Zebra crossing. I can feel why legendary musicians Mozart and Beethoven and great painter like Klimt loved this city and nurtured their ideas and dreams here.

I thanked my father, for he never thrust his desire on us, and I could study arts and literature and search my own dreams. How happy he would be seeing the great architectures here…

'It is not the same what was till 40 years ago. Now, if you opt for a music or acting course you have to weigh what options, job opportunities are before you. Time is changing here too.' Vivien said.

A lot has changed in between these 40 years but relics of past still haunt this city. There is a 'nameless library' in Judenplatz, built in the memory of Austrian Jews killed by Nazis between 1938 to 1945, which was inaugurated in 2000.

I discussed with Vivien, a prominent Hindi writer, Nirmal Verma and his travelogues.

In mid 90s, while in college, I read his travelogues and dreamed about visiting Vienna some day. He must have been of my age only, when he visited Vienna in early 60s, I thought.

'For us researchers life starts at 30.', Zakia, a Bangladeshi-American friend’s casual remark, which she made five years ago in Delhi, was echoing in my mind.

You always have company of books, movies and memories, even when you are traveling alone.

I saw Vivien’s cup was empty, while I still had to drink it. I poured some coffee in her cup, she smiled sheepishly.

Love and longing in Vienna

Are you from India? Do you speak Hindi? Asked the young lady behind the counter at Tibet Restaurant in Vienna.
Han main Hindi hi janta hoon, angrezi tho bus pet palne ke liye seekhi hai (I know Hindi only, learnt English to make both ends meet), I replied.
'Please pay me just what is there in the bill.'
No please, you have served us delicious dinner, I must pay this. I insisted to tip after having dinner with Vivien, my Viennese friend, at the restaurant near State opera house (Volksoper).
'Nahi, nahi aap isse rakh lijiye, nahi tho mujhko bahut dukh hoga..Aap India se aaya hai…Main aapse kuch bhi nahi loongi' (Please keep it. You are from India and I won’t accept any tip. I will be hurt if you pay this).
I saw her moist eyes and heard her quivering voice. I kept the money silently.
I asked Tenzin Choeky, a lady with dark hair, beautiful eyes, English accent and North East Indian features, if she was from India?
'Yes, I am from India.'
Manipur or Assam?
'No, I came from Darjeeling. I am a Tibetan', gently she said.
I kept her visiting card in my wallet and got out swiftly.
Vivien said, for only three Euros both of you were arguing for 10 minutes!
I kept mum and barely managed to say, yes…
She wrote the tube number and bus number on a piece of paper for me and we went together till Wahringer Street, Metro station.
It was 11 in the night. We had to go in two different directions.
'There is nothing like a good company...', so said an unknown budding actress, who I befriended the day before in Vienna.
Waiting for the last Metro, my eyes were wandering, my heart was longing and I was listening to a voice…. Tibet! Tibet! Tibet!

Now the slogan is, Internet first!

"I really do not know what it would be like after 10 years. It is very difficult to say whether this newspaper will survive or not…", says Katja Knoche, a reporter at Siegen Zeitung.

She says, "Now the slogan is, Internet first!"

Siegen Zeitung, 188 years old newspaper, published from Siegen, is quite popular in this region. Knoche has been associated with this newspaper for last 20 years.

Unprecedented changes have been taking place, in the last two decades, in the realm of global media. While there has been phenomenal growth of electronic media and online news worldwide, the future of print in the west is very much at stake.

In the 90s when Indian media was witnessing a ‘revolution’, German media was also seeing an upheaval in broadcasting sector. With the unification of Germany on 3 October 1990 a new commercial broadcasting sector has emerged.

Indian media, particularly Indian language newspapers, have been thriving and complementing growing news channels (there was only one state controlled news channel, Doordarshan, in 1991, however with the start of first private news channel in 1998, in 2010 there are more than 300 satellite channels which broadcast news in different languages in India) after liberalization and globalization of Indian economy. Newspaper industry in Germany is facing a serious competition from electronic media as television, radio and online news.

Knoche pointed out, ongoing economic crisis in Europe and dwindling readership is posing a major threat to Siegen Zeitung.

In 2006 Seigen Zeitung had a readership of 65 thousand people, in 2010 it has come down to 56 thousand. Besides Seigen Zeitung, two other daily newspapers get published from Siegen. Siegen, a medieval city, has one lakh and five thousand inhabitants.

Knoche says young people are not interested in buying and reading newspaper, moreover they read it online.

An obituary of a newspaper in the land of Gutenberg (Gutenberg was born in Mainz, Germany and is credited with using first printing press around 1456, and making the multiple copies of a text) sounds depressing but it seems interesting to map the trajectories of German media industry in this era of globalisation.

(Note: Writer is currently working on 'a comparative study of German and Indian media in the era of globalisation' under German Research Foundation fellowship at Siegen University, Germany. In the picture, Katja Knoche with her colleague jan Schafer in Siegen Zeitung office.)
